Terminology of magazines

Bar code/ date issue/ price: Situated normally towards the bottom of the magazine. Only small sometimes only used where it can fit.

Sell lines: Short sharp description of the titles marketing point, sometimes there if often more than one and they inform the reader at a quick glance.

Boost/Banner: The main feature article that appears to be in the centre of the screen however can vary. On the top of the pops magazine the boost is interestingly in a circular shape which made it stand out a lot more. (Top of the Pops)

Main image: The main image is normally in the centre of the page however it can vary on how the editor wants it to display on the page can follow the rule of thirds. The magazine normally uses the main image to be the artists they do the double page spread on. (Kerrang!)

Masthead: The name of the magazine displayed in a particular font/style etc.

Burst:  Normally in a star shape in a contrasting colour to make it stand out. (NME Magazine)

Skyline: Part of a magazine cover which which may help to advertise or promote a free gift. Traditionally at the top of the magazine however it can be at the bottom (NME)
