Q MAGAZINE

Q is a popular magazine that is published monthly in the United Kingdom. The founders of the magazine were David Hepworth and Mark Ellen. They created the magazine because they felt that the media was ignoring a generation of older music consumers who were buying CDS. Q was first published by EMAP media group in October 1986. Originally it was to be called 'cue' as a short term for 'cue the music' but ended up sounding to much for a snooker magazine. As they changed the logo and name, it made it more edgy and prominent on the newsstands. In January 2008 EMAP sold it consumer magazine titles including Q to the Bauer Media Group.

The magazine features an 'Every month' section. It shows what is featured in the magazine and there is a page about subscribing. Subscribing will mean the reader can have each edition delivered to there door and at a lower cost.
The magazine featured interviews, reviews news about artists etc. On the contents page there is always a large image, mainly of the artist that's going to be in a double page spread etc. The magazine is packed with the latest buzzing information to album and tour guides.

From the NRS I have concluded that there are 377,000 readers. 264,000 of this total are ABC1 socio economic class. This really jumps out as this magazine would appeal to this middle/upper class audience. The contents must reflect this. 233,000 people are aged 15-34. Which is actually surprising to me. Only 133,000 are 35+. In my opinion I thought there would be more readers over 35+. I initially thought this because Mark Ellen and David Hepworth did want to appeal to an older audience. However 'older' can be a different definition in other peoples opinions. Q features big artists such as Noel Gallagher and David Bowie, this is why I thought it would appeal to older people, because many teenagers/ younger audience are focussed on the mainstream 21st century however excluding a few.

The red is extremely striking as normally it is associated with danger and blood etc, everyday and overused connotations. The red is quite reassuring and demonstrates confidence and power to me. Underneath the logo has there slogan 'Britains Biggest Music Magazine' helping to empower the magazine. The images of the artists/celebrities is always very confident dominant and original. Noels face in this photo is conveying sheer confidence and attitude. Maybe this is conveying something that will be in the interview.  The magazines images stick to a colour scheme of black, white, grey etc. The Q almost looks to me like an eye, grabbing for my attention.

Bauer media group publish the magazine and distribute it.
They are a big multinational media company which operates in 15 countries worldwide.

Q magazine obviously had a set target audience in mind and I think they took this into hard consideration. A lot of readers spend time on the internet as well so they set up online.

Interestingly I thought Q magazine had a simple concept, but with consideration everything has such complexity to it. E.g. The name 'Q'.
